A quick fix on the 4.x and 3.2.X series which fixes the problem reported in this post at stackoverflow the proposed solution is used for both new and old charts.
Check for the ChartReportWithExpressionColumnTest and BarChartBuilderExpressionColumnTest unit tests to check it is working properly.
